Quaggy Jo rises just south of Presque Isle, the one real hill in a county that otherwise runs to open sky, and in May its hardwoods leaf out a week ahead of the fields below. Aroostook Aboriculture works with that green, mowing, trimming and keeping the ground around trees and yards in order as the short northern season opens. Grass grows hard and fast up here between late thaw and first frost, so the schedule matters more than it would anywhere south of here. Cleanups clear the winter's damage in spring and the leaf fall in October, before the ground locks up for good. A trimmed, cut yard standing against all that Aroostook sky is a satisfying piece of order.
