By late June the light in Portland runs long past supper, and the dooryard gardens of the West End hold onto it until nearly nine. ZG Gardens works that hour and the cool ones on either side of it — mowing, edging along walks and borders, trimming what the mower can't reach, keeping beds weeded and mulched dark and even. The peninsula grows on thin, salt-tempered ground, and a lawn between Deering Oaks and Capisic Pond earns its green; it wants feeding, patient watering-in, and a cut that isn't taken too low. Spring begins with the cleanup — winter sand raked out, perennials cut back, the yard opened up again. Autumn ends the same way, with the maples along Back Cove letting go all at once and the leaves gathered and hauled before the first hard freeze pins them down. What stays with you afterward is the edge: one clean line where grass stops and walk begins, holding all summer.
