Morning comes to Pittsfield off the Sebasticook, a low river fog that lifts about the time the mowers start running along Waverley Avenue. Hydro Grass Corporation works these lawns the way the town itself is laid out — brick and river on one side, open farm country on the other, and grass in between that wants cutting from May clear through October. Mowing, trimming, edging, overseeding and the long cleanups at either end of the year: it is plain work, and it is a fine thing to watch a yard come back green after a hard Somerset County winter. There is a particular pleasure in the last pass beside a sidewalk, where the line between lawn and pavement goes sharp enough to read from the road.
