At dawn on the Phippsburg peninsula the Kennebec runs out past Fort Popham on the ebb, the marsh grass along the Sprague River lights up first, and the tall pines on the ridge road hold their fog a while longer. Hawkes Tree Service works that narrow strip between river and sea — pines removed where they lean over a roof, crowns pruned back on the salt-scoured side, limbs cleared from driveways that are more root than gravel. Northeasters come straight up the river mouth, and cleanup afterward can be a week of it: cut, chip, haul, rake, done.
