West of the village the land climbs in long birch-and-pine ridges toward Canton, and every yard carved out of them has its own argument with a mower. Western Maine Log Yard settles those arguments weekly, cutting, trimming the tight ground around stumps and stone, and leaving a clear line where lawn ends and woods begin. Spring cleanups pull off the winter's litter of twigs and needles; fall cleanups take the maple leaves before the rain glues them to the grass. On a September morning with mist still lying in the low ground, a freshly cut field up here looks like something out of an old photograph. That is the whole point of the work: an ordinary Peru yard, kept in order, week after week.
