In February the storms slide down out of the western Maine foothills and settle thick over Peru, filling the dooryards along the Androscoggin and burying the back roads that climb toward Worthley Pond. Piper Landscaping is out in the blue dark before the mill whistle, plows angling the drifts off the drives so the town can find its way to the day. Come June the same hands trade the blade for the mower, drawing clean green rows across yards that fall toward the river and rise into the pines. There is a plain satisfaction in a drive scraped down to the gravel and a lawn cut level under the long valley light — the kind of work that leaves a place looking tended. Across Peru and the hill towns nearby, that is the season Piper keeps.
