By late October the Northport shore has emptied out, leaves down along Saturday Cove, Islesboro sitting low and blue across the water. Suydam and Sons carries a property through both halves of that year — mowing, trimming and yard cleanups while the grass still runs, then plowing and clearing once Route 1 goes white and the bay throws wet, heavy snow inland. Coastal winter is its own animal: freeze, thaw, glaze, and a wind that packs drift hard against the seaward side of everything. Working here means being the reason a camp road stays passable and a drive off the Shore Road is open before anyone needs it.
