North Yarmouth keeps its farm bones: long sloping fields above the Royal River, stone walls that predate every mailbox, orchards holding the high ground toward Walnut Hill. A lawn here has to be read before it is cut — where the morning damp sits under the maples, where August thins a strip down to straw. Mowing, trimming, edging and spring and fall cleanups make up the week, and the pleasure of it is in the finish: a clean line along a gravel drive, leaves gone before the first hard frost, a yard that looks composed instead of merely shortened. The routes run the back roads out past Toddy Brook and Sligo Road, and on into the neighboring towns. Green things grow fast in this soil; the work is keeping them looking intentional.
