The ferry from Rockland crosses about an hour of open bay before easing into the Fox Islands Thorofare, where North Haven's village waterfront faces Vinalhaven across a narrow channel of tide. Treneer Lawn and Landscape works this island when spring finally arrives, as the fields shed their winter brown and lilac and apple blossom come late but all at once. Lawn and landscape care here happens with the sea always in sight and the wind always moving in the trees. A newly mown lawn running down toward the Thorofare, with beds cleared and ready, is one of the island's lovely small sights. It's practical, patient work, and it gets the whole summer off on the right foot.
