Twice a day the tide takes twenty feet out of Cobscook Bay and hands every inch of it back, and Lubec seems to breathe along with it. Klondike Mountain looks after the lawns above that shoreline — mowing, trimming, edging, and the seasonal cleanups a coastal yard always asks for. Afternoons here arrive with the bridge to Campobello standing bright over the narrows and gulls working the current underneath. Cut grass and cold saltwater turn out to be a fine pair of smells. The work reaches Lubec and the small places nearby.
