The Kenduskeag winds through Levant between alder banks, brown and busy in spring, low and clear by August. Patriot Works mows and trims the yards along those Penobscot County roads, where hayfield gives way to dooryard and the sky stays wide open above both. Grass this far north starts late and then arrives all at once, and holding it even from June into September takes showing up whether or not it rained. The pleasure of it is uncomplicated: a straight edge along the walk, a level cut across the whole yard, clippings settled and the machines shut down. Then the light goes long and gold over the fields, and the day is finished.
