By ten on an August morning the sand road out toward Seapoint is too hot to stand on barefoot, and the dune grass leans all one way. Reynolds and Sons Lawncare runs its route through that heat — mowing, trimming, edging — keeping Kittery lawns even while the sun does its level to bleach them out. Near the water the grass takes salt spray and thin soil and still comes back green, provided somebody minds it. The crisp border along a walkway is the small pride of this trade, drawn fresh every week. Then the machines go quiet, and the yard sits there looking like somebody loves it.
