Kingfield lies in a fold of the western mountains along the Carrabassett River, where snow arrives thick and often and stays deep into spring. Jordan Excavation is a digging business at heart; once the ground locks up for winter, its machines turn to plowing driveways and clearing snow around the village. Before daylight, while Route 27 is still dark and quiet, the plow is already making its rounds. The finished work is what a mountain town counts on: a driveway pushed wide, banks stacked high and neat, and a clear run from the garage door to the road.
