Bare ground is the starting point here — a new house lot with the machines just gone, a bank cut too steep to seed by hand, the raw sandy shoulders that the Kenduskeag Stream valley leaves behind. Wing's Hydroseeding sprays those slopes green in a single afternoon, seed and mulch laid on in an even coat that holds the soil while the roots take hold. Then comes the good part: ten days or so later, a faint green haze comes up out of the mulch, and a few weeks after that there is a lawn where there was nothing at all. Late spring and early fall are the kind seasons for it in central Penobscot County, when rain is steady and the ground is warm. Turning stripped dirt into something a family can walk barefoot across is a fine way to spend a day.
