Out on Moosabec Reach the tide runs hard between Jonesport and Beals, boats swinging on their moorings under the bridge, and the salt wind reaches every lawn in town. Fhtteeew mows and trims in that weather — grass that grows short and tough, yards edged by ledge and rugosa, dooryards facing straight into the fog when it comes in off the water. Down East summers are brief and busy, so the work runs steady from the first green through the blueberry barrens turning red in September. Cleanups clear the winter's salt-burned litter in spring and the last of the leaves before the cold sets its grip. A trim yard above the harbor, with the water moving beyond it, is worth the wind you stand in to make it.
