Damariscotta Lake runs the whole length of Jefferson, and in August the camp lawns along it get mowed with the sound of the water twenty feet away and somebody's dock creaking in the chop. Steven's lawncare service's covers those shoreline yards and the village ones too, up around the crossroads and out on the roads toward Clary Lake and Whitefield. Lakeside grass is its own puzzle — soft ground near the shore, thin soil under the pines, and always the question of where the clippings ought to go. Cleanups bookend the season: winter debris hauled out in April, leaves cleared in the sharp bright weeks before the camps close. A cut lawn sloping down to open water is about as good as Lincoln County looks.
