Everything on Islesboro arrives by boat, the mower included — the ferry crosses from Lincolnville and the island takes its own time from there. House of Danes Property Service keeps lawns on this narrow strip of land in shape, mowing, trimming and edging from Grindle Point down toward Dark Harbor, with cleanups at either end of the season. Salt wind and bay fog make island grass its own creature: tough, slow, and greener than it has any right to be. Half these yards are watched all year and lived in for part of it, so showing up on schedule is most of the job. A cut lawn with the water flashing behind it is hard to beat.
