On the coldest mornings the Saco steams, and the fog lifts off the water at Bar Mills and Salmon Falls to lay a glaze over everything it touches. Carefree Plowing knows which Hollis driveways ice up in that river air first and treats them accordingly, sand down before anyone backs out. The town spreads across three old mill villages and a lot of wooded road between, so the route is long and the storms rarely cooperate with it. Still, there is a rhythm to a good night: the first pass while it is still falling, the cleanup pass at daybreak, the shovel work at the door so nobody steps into a drift in their work boots. Waking up to a driveway already open is the whole idea, and it never stops being a good feeling to deliver.
