In Hodgdon the wind comes across open potato ground from the New Brunswick side with nothing at all to slow it, and by midnight a road plowed at nine can be drifted shut again. JMM Services runs those long straight stretches and the farm drives that hang off them, opening the same ground twice when the night asks for it. Aroostook driveways are not short; they run past sheds and turnarounds and out to a dooryard where somebody needs to get a truck moving before light. Sand goes down where the grade tips toward the ditch, because up here ice is the quieter danger. The best part of the job arrives around six, when the kitchen window comes on and the way out is already clear.
