On a still January morning sea smoke rises off the water at the cribstone bridge and the whole of Orr's Island goes soft and white. That is when R.A. Webber & Sons is already out, plowing island drives and the long private ways that run down toward the shore. Snow that arrives with salt in it packs heavy and freezes hard, so the method is push it early, push it clean, and come back when the wind drifts it in again. Walkways get opened, steps cleared, and the mouth of the drive cut square so the road plow's wall doesn't shut anybody in. This is snow work in a place where the weather comes straight off the ocean and never asks first.
