Route 123 runs the length of Harpswell Neck like a spine, with water showing through the spruce on both sides, and in April the frost heaves settle and the lawns come back all at once. Aceto and Sons Landscape Construction works that ribbon of road and the dooryards hung off it, mowing and edging until a yard reads clean all the way from the mailbox. Salt air is hard on turf out here, so the cutting is patient and the trimming is close, and the difference shows in one straight line along a granite step. Come winter the same driveways get plowed out to bare pavement before the mail truck makes the neck. It is unglamorous work, and it is the whole reason a house looks cared for from the road.
