Route 1 runs through Hancock between Ellsworth and the Sullivan bridge, and a good share of what sits along it wakes in May and sleeps in November. Pettengill Properties LLC works to that calendar and straight on past it: mowing, trimming and edging through the green stretch, raking and hauling leaves as the light shortens, then plowing, shoveling and sanding once the wind off the bay turns hard. Winter out this way is wet and stubborn — salt in the air, ice sitting under the crust. The drives at the quiet houses need opening too, so that no one's place looks abandoned come February. Twelve months of looking after one patch of coast, and every one of them shows.
