There is a brook that gives Coldbrook Road its name, running quick and cold under the culverts on the west side of Hampden, and Coldbrook Lawn Service works the ground on either side of it. Through the growing months that means mowing on a steady rotation, trimming around posts and stone, and clearing the leaf drift that piles against the treeline once September turns. Then the calendar flips and those same yards need plowing — a drive opened end to end, a walkway shoveled down to bare boards, sand where the ice sets up in the shade. Hampden gets rain in October and hardpack in January, and both are answered the same way, which is to say on time. A yard that looks tended in July and passable in February is the entire ambition.
