Gilead sits deep in the Androscoggin valley, tucked so close under the mountains that the winter sun drops behind the ridges by mid-afternoon and the cold comes down fast. Route 2 threads through town beside the river, and the Wild River runs in from the national forest to meet it — lovely country, and hard country to keep open in January. Brady Earth and Stone plows snow here: driveways opened, entrances cleaned out, and the snow shoved well aside so the following storm has somewhere to land. Narrow valley lots ask for a feel for the terrain — steep drives, tight turnarounds, ground that is more stone than soil. When the plowing is finished the drive is a dark ribbon through white, and the house at its end is ready for whatever the mountains send down next.
