Garland is farm country with the corners rounded off — Garland Pond flat as a plate at sunrise, hayfields running up the rise behind it, dirt roads that lead off to four other towns. If Trees Could Talk... mows the lawns out here, the big open ones around farmhouses and the smaller yards in the village, trimming around barn corners, granite steps and the old maples lining the road. Inland Penobscot County summers swing from a soaking June to a dry August, and the cut height changes right along with them. Fall means leaves off the grass and one last low pass before the ground hardens. A mown yard set against a rough field is a very good kind of contrast.
