Come the first week of October, Fryeburg fills up for the fair, the mornings turn cold over Lovewell Pond and the maples do their showing off. Maine Turf Company works the lawns around town straight through that turn — mowing while the grass still pushes, then raking and hauling leaves until the yards are bare and tidy ahead of the freeze. The rest of the season runs steadier: weekly cutting, trimmed fence lines, clean edges along walks and driveways. Grass in the Saco valley responds when it is cut on time, and it shows. A yard put to bed in November comes back in April looking like somebody was paying attention.
