Franklin sits back from the water just far enough — blueberry barrens turning color on the high ground, granite ledge under thin soil, Taunton Bay glittering off toward the coast road. Mr. Ed's Lawn Care LLC mows the yards in between, the ones with more rock than loam and a spruce line where the lawn finally gives up. Down East grass grows in bursts after fog and rain, so the cutting is timed to the weather rather than the week. Trimming around ledge outcrops and stone walls takes the longest and shows the most. There is a good moment at the end of a Franklin afternoon when the mower shuts off, the barrens go red in the low sun, and the lawn is the neatest thing on the road.
