Snow comes to Fort Kent off the Fish River valley and keeps coming after dark, filling a driveway back in as fast as it was cleared at supper. Mike's & Sons runs plows through those nights, working the steep little streets above the water and the flat lots down near the bridge. Getting a car out in the morning is the whole point, so the pass that matters most is the last one — the clean apron at the road where the town plow throws its heaviest windrow. Shovel work at the steps and a sanded walk finish what a blade cannot reach. Northern Aroostook winters are long enough to measure in feet, and there is something steady about a place that gets dug out every single time.
