April in Edgecomb is a slow unfolding — the frost lets go, the woods roads firm up, and the first green pushes through last year's leaves along the Cross River. Trillium Fine Gardening opens the year there with cleanups: lifting matted leaves off the crowns, cutting in bed edges, laying fresh mulch, and getting the mower out once the ground will hold it. Through summer it settles into mowing and careful trimming, keeping the lines neat where lawn runs up to a stone wall. Gardens in this town live in dappled light, and much of the work is simply making room for it. By late November the beds are put down clean and the leaves are gone.
