Storms come up the Penobscot valley after dark, and Eddington hears them before it sees them — wind first in the pines along the east bank, then the snow. By the time headlights start moving toward Brewer, the drives are cut clean down to the pavement and the walkways have been shoveled and gritted. Winter here does not ask politely; it simply arrives, and the answer is a truck already rolling. The best part of the job is the empty, open road behind the plow at four in the morning.
