October on Moose Island arrives on a northeast wind, and the leaves let go in one long afternoon. Snow Grow LLC spends those weeks raking, opening up the beds and hauling the season's litter off Eastport dooryards before the ground turns hard. Summer is the steadier half of the year: mowing week by week and keeping the edges honest along the causeway roads, where spruce crowds in close to the pavement. There is a particular pleasure in a well-kept lawn way out here at the far edge of the map, with Cobscook Bay running silver behind it. The work is plain, and the result speaks just as plainly.
