The Androscoggin makes its own weather in Dixfield — river fog at first light, then a hard skin of frost on everything until the sun clears the hills over in Peru. Pine State Landworks runs snow removal in that valley: plowing driveways and lots, sanding the slick pitches, clearing walkways down where the Webb River comes in to meet the big water. Route 2 gets scoured while the side hills get loaded, so no two storms hand you the same job. There is a particular pride in a steep dooryard that a car can climb at six in the morning without a second thought. That is the work, one lane at a time, right through to mud season.
