Deer Isle is built on granite — quarried, hauled and shipped off to raise half the buildings on this coast, with the ledges still standing open where the stone came out. Island Earth Care mows the thin green that grew back over the top of it. Lawns here fit themselves between outcrops and spruce roots, so the work is patient: mowing, close trimming around rock, edging whatever can be edged, and carrying off needles and blowdown when the year turns at both ends. Mornings on the Sunshine Road side arrive in fog and burn clear by ten. What is left at the end of a day is a yard that looks intentional in a place that mostly is not.
