There is a moment in late June when a yard stands at its full height — grass thick, borders reaching, everything green at once. Through The Garden Gate works inside that abundance: mowing, trimming, edging the beds and the walks so the planted ground and the mown ground each know where they stand, and clearing away whatever the season sheds. A gate makes a good image for the job — one side kept, one side left wild, and somebody deciding where the line falls. In Corinna the wild side is never far off; the woods begin at the back of the field. Summer's work is holding that line gently, week after week.
