Coplin Plantation is high, thinly settled country in Maine's western mountains, where winter arrives early and holds on until the brooks break open in April. Libbys Tree provides snow removal here, opening home driveways and camp roads after storms come pouring over the ridgelines. Some nights it falls so steadily that by first light the woods are muffled, every fir bough loaded and every lane erased. Then the plow's work becomes a kind of drawing: one clean dark line back to the road, banks pushed wide, the way out made plain. Under the hard blue sky that follows, a driveway cleared that well feels like the mountains agreed, for one more day, to let you go.
