Fair week comes to Clinton in September with the cornfields still high along Route 100 and the evenings finally cooling off. Mainly Mow spends the season on lawns around the village and out the farm roads — mowing, trimming, edging, and the seasonal cleanups that bookend the growing months. Grass in this part of the Kennebec valley grows fast in June and stubbornly in September, and holding a route on schedule through both is most of the trade. The reward is small and repeatable: pulling away from a yard that was shaggy an hour ago and is now trimmed to its corners. Do that all week and the town looks better for it.
