Picea is the botanist's word for spruce, and in Carrabassett Valley the spruce climb the flanks of Sugarloaf until they give way to bare summit rock. Picea Earth and Stone looks after the grass in this mountain town; the growing season here is brief, the soil thin, and every stretch of lawn around a home or condo hard-won. Summer comes late to the valley and then arrives all at once, the Carrabassett River running cold and clear beside the Narrow Gauge Pathway, the Bigelow Range sharp against the afternoon sky. A lawn cut sharp to the treeline is a bit of civility in a big wild place, ready for warm evenings outdoors before the lifts start turning again.
