Caribou counts its winters in feet, and by February the snowbanks along Sweden Street can rise shoulder-high. Eleiott Construction plows and clears snow in this northern Aroostook city, where wind off the open fields can drift a driveway shut within an hour of the last pass. In the dark of a January morning, thermometer well below zero and headlights throwing gold across the drifts, the job is simple: give people their way out, to work, to school, across the Aroostook River and into town.
