Buckfield's roads climb and drop with the land, and the Nezinscot River runs cold and dark under them all winter. D & D Excavating Inc. plows here through February, when the hill farms drift in and the north-facing driveways hold ice clear into March. The work is plowing, opening a path to the door, and spreading sand where a car simply cannot find traction. Snow in these hills falls dry and blows, so a drive cleared at midnight may want another visit at six — and gets one. There is something plainly satisfying about a string of driveways opened while the whole valley is still asleep.
