Three in the morning on Route 113, snow coming level across the headlights, Burnt Meadow Mountain somewhere out in the dark: that is the shift Johnson Excavation works. They plow Brownfield driveways, shovel the walks down to the step, and sand the hill approaches that glaze over before anything else does. Storms funnel down this valley and drop more than the coast ever sees, so a night usually means two rounds, sometimes three. By breakfast the drifts have blue shadows in them and everybody can get out. The mountain gets the postcards; the driveways get the plow.
