North of Bangor the land opens into hayfields, and the Kenduskeag Stream threads through Bradford in slow brown curves. Tucker's Tree Service keeps lawns out here on the long gravel-shouldered roads, where a mowed yard is a bright green room cut out of the woods. Mowing, trimming, edging, and the cleanups that pull winter's litter off the grass — that is the week's work, from mud season to the last warm Saturday in October. There is a particular satisfaction in the moment the engine shuts off and the yard sits still and even in the afternoon light. Bradford is a small place, and the lawns here get looked after like they belong to somebody, because they do.
