Some Boothbay mornings begin inside a cloud — fog off the harbor, spruce dripping, the water down the hill audible but not visible. Johns Lawns waits out the wet and then goes to work, mowing lawns that run right to the ledge, trimming around granite outcrop and stone step where no mower will ever fit. Salt air and thin soil make for grass that is greener than it has any right to be, provided somebody keeps after it. Summer here is compressed and busy, so the cutting stays on schedule from the first warm week through the last of the visitors. When the fog finally lifts around noon, the lawn is done, the edges are clean, and the harbor is right there below it all.
