Biddeford's yards were laid out around the mills — narrow, sloped, hemmed in by brick and by trees that have had a long time to get large. Bennett's Tree Trimming mows and trims in that tight geometry, working close to granite curbing and fence posts, cutting an edge that gives a small lot a clear outline. Up at Clifford Park the canopy closes over the road in July and the whole neighborhood cools by a few degrees; the shaded lawns below it need a different touch than the sunny ones near the water. Autumn drops a great deal of leaf here all at once, and it gets cleared off the grass rather than left to mat down over winter. The reward is a street of small, well-kept greens holding their own against a great deal of brick.
