Under Berwick's old shade trees, grass has to be coaxed rather than commanded — thin light, shallow roots, needles and leaves coming down all season long. Red Squirrel Arborcare mows and trims those yards with an eye on what is growing above them, clearing the drop in spring and again in fall, laying mulch where turf will never hold, holding a straight line along walks and drives. The town's lots run from open riverside flats to pockets of woods that were never quite cleared, and the cut has to suit the ground. What comes out of it is a lawn that fits its trees instead of fighting them. Berwick and its neighbors are all a short run down the road.
