Mrs.O's service company keeps the yards and driveways of Bath, Maine, the small river city where the Kennebec slides past a downtown of brick storefronts and the tall gray cranes of the old shipyard. In the growing months the work is mowing and tending the green — lawns cut clean along streets that climb up from the water, edges left trim as a ruled line, the grass holding its color deep into the long midcoast light. When winter stacks snow against the doors before daybreak, the same hands are out with the plow, opening a drive so a car can reach Front Street and the day can begin. There is a plain, good pride in all of it: a walk cleared, a lawn squared away, one corner of a working river town looking cared for through whatever the season hands it.
