Baring sits at the edge of the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, where woodcock spiral up into the dusk on spring evenings and tumble back down singing. HeatherWood Gardens brings lawn care to this wild corner of Washington County, cutting and tidying yards that border forest, bog and the St. Croix. A lawn here is a small clearing in a big country, and keeping it trim is what makes a dooryard feel open and welcoming. The work is about proportion: crisp borders, tidy beds, grass kept short enough that the woods stay at a respectful distance. In the last light of May, with the peepers in full chorus, a freshly mown yard in Baring feels like a welcome mat laid at the forest's edge.
