East of the river the road climbs toward Holden and Eddington, where a hard freeze makes the gravel ring under the tires. Phippen's Earthwork Construction Unlimited runs snow work along those ridges — plowing long rural drives, pushing the banks back before they close in, shoveling steps and spreading sand where the grade has turned to glass. Country driveways take real distance and real iron, and the drifts out here don't ask permission first. A quarter-mile drive opened wide from the barn to the town road is a thing worth standing back to look at. Bangor and the hill towns beyond it get the same treatment.
