New Auburn's streets climb straight up off the Androscoggin, and in a storm the gap between a plowed hill and an unplowed one is the gap between going to work and staying home. Homeplowing and recovery runs those grades at night — driveways opened, dooryards squared off, walks and steps shoveled down, sand where the slope insists on it. Snow coming up the river valley packs quick under traffic, so it's better taken early and taken again. There's an hour around three in the morning when the whole city is white and unmarked and the only sound anywhere is a blade. By the time the first shift starts, the drives are open.
