Up on the Mount Apatite side of Auburn the ground still remembers the old quarries — thin soil, stubborn ledge, grass that has to be coaxed rather than commanded. Fresh Start Landscape takes that as an invitation, laying mow lines straight across a slope and cutting borders you could run a thumb along. In January the damp cold comes up off the Androscoggin and dooryards fill overnight, so the plow goes out while the streetlights are still doing all the work. There is a real satisfaction in pavement showing black before the first car turns onto Minot Avenue. Then April loosens everything, the rakes come back out, and the whole green season starts over on the same streets.
