Spring reaches Arundel first as mud and then, inside a week, as green everywhere at once — stone walls surfacing out of the snowbanks, the old apple trees along Log Cabin Road going white. Wood's Farm Landscaping opens the year right there: raking out beds, clearing the winter's litter, mulching, seeding thin ground, and rolling mowers onto lawns that have been waiting since November. From then on it's weekly cutting, trimming and edging until the leaves come down and the whole thing runs in reverse. Farm-country yards are broad and open, and there's real pleasure in a wide lawn cut in even lines with the field lying beyond it. It looks like the place is being kept, because it is.
